The Morton Salt heiress is a reference to a woman named Joy Morton, the founder of Morton Salt Company. Joy Morton was born in 1855 in Nebraska and was the son of J. Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day. After attending the University of Nebraska, Joy Morton worked in a sawmill owned by his father. In 1880, he moved to Chicago and invested in a small salt company, eventually becoming the sole owner and renaming it Morton Salt Company.
Over the years, Morton Salt Company grew into a major player in the salt industry, with Joy Morton overseeing its operations until his death in 1934. Following his death, his son Mark Morton took over as president of the company.
Today, Morton Salt Company is still a major brand in the United States, offering a wide range of salt products for both consumer and industrial use. However, the company is no longer owned by the Morton family, having been sold to German company K+S in 2009.
